How long should you hold a plank?

Longer is not better. Strength coaches who work with the plank generally recommend holds of 20 to 60 seconds with perfect form, repeated for two to four sets, rather than a single multi-minute hold. Once you can hold 60 seconds comfortably, the exercise has stopped getting harder in a useful way; add difficulty instead by lifting a leg, moving the elbows forward, or switching to side planks and dynamic variations. Records of many hours exist, but they train endurance in a fixed position, not core strength.

A rough benchmark for healthy adults: under 30 seconds, build up; 30–60 seconds, solid; over 90 seconds, time to progress the exercise rather than the clock.

Form checklist

  • Elbows under shoulders, forearms parallel, fists relaxed.
  • Body in a straight line from head to heels; look at the floor a little in front of your hands.
  • Squeeze the glutes and brace the abdomen as if about to be poked; this stops the lower back sagging, which is the most common fault and the one that causes pain.
  • Breathe normally. Holding the breath raises blood pressure and shortens the hold.
  • Stop the set when form breaks: hips drop, shoulders hunch, or the body starts to shake hard. That is the useful end point, not a clock.

Using the timer

Choose a goal (30, 45, 60 or 90 seconds) and the timer counts down with a tone at the end, or use count-up mode to see how long you can hold with good form. Your personal best is saved on this device. For a full set with rests between holds, the interval timer can run, for example, 40 seconds hold and 20 seconds rest for four rounds; for a circuit that mixes planks with other exercises, the workout timer. A simple progression: add 5 seconds to the goal each week until 60, then switch to harder variations at 45 seconds.
