What the countdown shows

Enter your planned retirement date and the page counts down the years, months, days and hours remaining, the number of working days left (weekdays, excluding weekends but not public holidays), and the percentage of your working life completed if you also enter the year you started work. The date is saved on this device. Some people keep it on a second screen as motivation; others check it once a month as a nudge to review savings. Either way, the working-day count is the number that tends to surprise: 15 years to retirement is about 3,900 working days.

Finding your retirement date

State pension ages are set by law and vary by country and birth year: 65 in Türkiye for men (60 for women, rising), 67 in Germany and most of the EU for people born after 1964, 66 rising to 67 in the UK and the US, 65 in Canada and Australia. Occupational pensions and personal plans can pay out earlier, often from 55 or 60, with a reduced amount. The date to enter here is the one you are planning for, not necessarily the statutory one; many people run two countdowns, the official date and the "if the numbers work" date, and watch the gap close.

Making the countdown useful

  • Savings check. Divide the amount you still want to save by the months remaining. A monthly figure is actionable; a total is not.
  • Skills and handover. With two years left, start documenting and delegating; with a year, plan a phased reduction if your employer allows it.
  • Health. Retirement is easier to enjoy if you arrive fit. The habit tracker and the workout timer are small tools for a large goal.
  • Purpose. People who plan what they will do, not only what they will stop doing, report better wellbeing in the first years. Use the countdown to schedule that planning, not just to wait.
