Parking Timer

The most common parking fine is not for parking in the wrong place; it is for coming back ten minutes late. Set the timer as you walk away from the meter, for the exact time you paid for, and it will warn you five minutes before expiry and again when time is up. Five minutes is enough to walk back from most shops, or to top up on a phone app if the operator allows it. If you know the walk is longer, set the early warning to ten. The timer keeps running while you browse other tabs; on a phone, keep the browser open or plug the phone in if you are relying on the sound.

Press Extend to add 15, 30 or 60 minutes to a running timer without resetting it, which mirrors topping up a meter or a parking app. The tool cannot pay for you; it only reminds you. Check the sign for maximum stays, since many bays allow a top-up but cap the total at two or three hours, and "no return within one hour" rules mean you cannot simply re-park in the same bay after the limit.

• Grace periods. Many cities give 5 or 10 minutes after expiry before a ticket is issued, but not all, and it is discretionary. Do not plan around it.
• Loading bays and residents' zones. Restrictions often apply only at certain hours; read the plate, and set the timer for the moment restrictions start if you are parked during a free window.
• Car parks with ANPR cameras. Time is measured from the moment you enter, not the moment you pay. Start the timer at the barrier.
• Street cleaning and market days. Weekly restrictions are the ones that catch residents. A recurring calendar reminder works better than a timer for those.
• Disc parking. Set the disc to the arrival time rounded up to the next half hour where required, and set the timer for the allowed stay.
