Fair time, visible to both sides
The debate timer gives each side its own clock and a shared display large enough for the room. Set the speaking time per turn, the number of rounds and, if the format uses them, the protected time at the start and end of a speech during which points of information are not allowed. A tone marks the start of each speech, the end of protected time and the final warning; a second, distinct tone marks time up. Both speakers and the chair see the same numbers, which removes most timing disputes before they begin.

Chairing tips
- Announce the format and the signals before the first speech, including what the final-warning tone means.
- Do not stop a speaker mid-sentence at time up; allow a few seconds to finish the sentence, then intervene. The timer's second tone is the cue.
- Keep the display visible to speakers but not distractingly central; a laptop at the chair's table angled towards the floor works well.
- For class use, pair the timer with a simple scoring sheet and let students chair, which teaches timekeeping as well as argument.
