Why a separate laundry timer
Washing machines beep once and then sit there. Leave a wet load for a few hours and it starts to smell, and in a shared laundry someone will pull it out and pile it on top of the dryer. This timer gives you a countdown that matches your machine's cycle and an alert loud enough to hear from another room, so the clothes move to the dryer or the line while they are still fresh. It also helps with a second load queued behind the first: set the timer, do something else, come back exactly when the drum stops.

Getting more from the wash
- Move it within 30 minutes. Mildew smell develops surprisingly fast in a warm drum. If you cannot get to it, run a short rinse-and-spin before drying.
- Do not over-dry. Most fabric damage comes from the dryer, not the washer. Set the dryer timer a little short and finish on a rack; clothes last longer and the dryer uses less energy.
- Shared machines. Set the timer for the cycle and be there when it ends. Fellow residents tolerate a lot, but not a load that sits in a shared washer for an hour.
- Multiple loads. The multi-timer runs up to four countdowns at once if the washer and dryer finish at different times.
