Converting a time correctly

Enter a date and time in the source zone and the converter shows the same instant in each target zone, up to five at once. The date field matters: the offset between two cities changes when either enters or leaves daylight saving, so "9:00 Berlin" converts to a different New York time on 20 March than on 10 March. Zones are identified by city (Europe/Berlin, America/New_York) using the IANA time zone database, which carries the official daylight saving rules for every region, so the result is correct for the specific date rather than an assumed fixed difference.

The mistakes this tool prevents

  • Memorised differences. "London is five hours ahead of New York" is wrong for several weeks each year, because the US and the EU change their clocks on different Sundays. Always convert for the date.
  • Ambiguous abbreviations. "IST" means India, Israel or Ireland; "CST" means Central US, China or Cuba. The converter uses city names for this reason.
  • Cross-date-line arithmetic. 22:00 Monday in Los Angeles is 15:00 Tuesday in Sydney. The converter shows the day as well as the time.
  • Zones without daylight saving. Türkiye, Russia, China, Japan, India and most of Africa and South-East Asia do not change their clocks, so their offset to Europe shifts by an hour twice a year even though nothing changed for them.

Our time zones guide goes through UTC, half-hour offsets and daylight saving rules in detail.

Finding a meeting time

Add every participant's city as a target zone and step the source time through the working day; the hour at which all targets fall between about 8:00 and 18:00 is your slot. London, New York and San Francisco share only 16:00–17:00 London time; add Singapore and there is no common working hour, so fair teams rotate the early or late slot. For an at-a-glance view of many cities right now, the world clock is quicker; for a fixed launch instant everyone counts down to, convert it here first and then set the countdown.

Current time shows your own local time and zone in a large format. The Unix timestamp converter is the developer's version of the same problem, where every time is stored in UTC and converted for display. The meeting timer keeps the call on schedule once the slot is agreed.
